Before Sharpsburg

Age 18, he enlisted on 6 May 1861 in Jacksonville, NC and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 14th North Carolina Infantry in July. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital with pertussis (whooping cough) by 9 October, was formally exchanged on 10 November, and was back with his company by December 1862.

He was wounded by a gunshot to his right side at Plymouth, NC on 20 April 1864, admitted to a hospital in Raleigh, NC by 18 June, and returned to his unit on 1 August. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 1 April 1865 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 15 June 1865, when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.

After the War

The bullet in his side was removed in the Fall of 1868. In 1889 he was living at Gum Branch in Onslow County, NC.
