Before Sharpsburg

Age 20, he enlisted on 6 August 1861 in Weldon, NC and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 14th North Carolina Infantry in July. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 11 October, sent to the parole camp on 17 October, and was formally exchanged about 10 November 1862. He was captured again, on 27 July 1863 at Jackson, NC and was a prisoner at Fortress Monroe, VA to 4 August, when he was paroled for exchange. He was in a hospital in Petersburg, VA from 21 June to 12 September 1864 and "deserted the lines in front of Petersburg, Va" on 20 November 1864. There is no later record in his military file.
