Before Sharpsburg

Age 22, he enlisted on 31 May 1861 in Smithfield, NC and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 14th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and back with his unit by December 1862.

He was with his company until he was retired to the Invalid Corps for disability on 18 November 1864 with no later military record.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer near Selma in Boonhill Township, Johnston County, NC with several Daughtry and Overby households nearby. In 1920 he was retired and living with his youngest, son Jesse and family there.

His gravesite is on Findagrave; his son Charlie (1865-1932) ordered his government marker in June 1931.

He married Nancy Elizabeth Daughtry (1844-) and they had 6 children between 1865 and 1884.
