Before Sharpsburg
A 46 year old farmer, he enlisted on 30 July 1861 in Weldon, NC and mustered as a Private in Company F of the 14th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 9 October, sent to the parole camp on 18 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and was discharged for being over-age on 17 November 1862.
