Before Sharpsburg

Age 19, he enlisted on 1 June 1861 in Fayetteville, NC and mustered as a Private in Company F of the 14th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 9 October, sent to the parole camp on the 17th, and was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He deserted his unit and was captured on 17 June 1864 near Petersburg, VA and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until 25 July, then sent on to the prison at Elmira, NY. Claiming to have been conscripted in July 1863, he asked to take an oath of allegiance to the United States there in September, but finally did so on 29 May 1865 and was released.

After the War

In 1880 he was a farmer at Panther Branch in Wake County, NC.
