Before Sharpsburg

Age 22, he enlisted on 1 June 1861 in Fayetteville, NC and mustered as a Private in Company F of the 14th North Carolina Infantry. They were re-designated the 24th North Carolina Infantry on 14 November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 5 October, furloughed for 30 days on 24 October, and formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He transferred to Company I of the 51st North Carolina Infantry in January 1864 but was in hospitals in Richmond and Fayetteville, NC - as a patient and on detail - for much of 1864 and early 1865, with no later military record.
