Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old farmer with a small place at Newton Grove in Johnston County, NC. He enlisted at Elevation, NC on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 24th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 8 October, sent to the parole camp on 21 October, and formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862. He was home on furlough from 12 November to about May 1863.

He was wounded by a gunshot in May 1864, place not given, and was furloughed home from a hospital in Richmond on 31 May for 60 days. He was declared a deserter as of 16 February 1865 with no later military record.

After the War

By 1870 he was a sawyer, carpenter, and wheelwright at Smithfield in Johnston County, NC and in 1880 was a farmer in Johnston County. At his death he was also a merchant and magistrate in Four Oaks, NC.
