Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with his parents and 5 siblings on their rented farm near Forks of Pigeon in Haywood County, NC. He enlisted in Haywood County on 29 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F of the 25th North Carolina Infantry on 20 July.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 and was back with his company by the end of 1862. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 31 November 1863 but was listed as a deserter from camp on 2 February 1864 with no later military record.

After the War

In 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer back in Pigeon, NC with many other Henson households nearby. In 1900 he was farming in Jackson County, NC, but by 1910 was again a farmer in Pigeon, NC.

He married Deborah Norris Mease (1844-1889) in April 1861 and they had 14 children - the first two (1865) and the last two (1887) twin girls. He married again, Aletha Sellers (1867-1967) in October 1889 and they had 6 more.
