Before Sharpsburg

A farmer's son, going by Washington, in 1860 he was an 18 year old blacksmith living with his parents and 7 siblings at Blue Ridge in Henderson County, NC. He enlisted in Henderson County on 5 October 1861 and mustered in Raleigh as a Private in Company G of the 35th North Carolina Infantry on 5 November.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and was back with his company on 29 December 1862. He deserted to the enemy, date not found. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States at City Point, VA on 4 October, was sent to Washington, DC the next day, then was released to go to New York City. There is no later military record.
