Before Sharpsburg
A carpenter's son, in 1860 he was a 32 year old carpenter living with his parents and 4 siblings at Fairview in Buncombe County, NC. He enlisted in Henderson County on 15 July 1861 and mustered the same day as 5th Sergeant of Company H of the 25th North Carolina Infantry. He was not reelected and so reduced to Private on 1 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a hospital in Richmond by 10 October, furloughed on 20 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to his company by the end of 1862. He was detailed as a carpenter by 30 June and to at least 31 October 1863. He deserted to the enemy at Petersburg, VA on 17 July 1864, took an oath of allegiance to the United States in Knoxville, TN on 21 March 1865, was at Louisville, KY on 3 April, and was "sent North."
After the War
By 1870 he was a farmer back in Fairview, NC. In 1880 he was a millwright there.
