Before Sharpsburg

Son of a teacher, in 1860 he was a 16 year old farmer living with his parents and 3 younger siblings at Butler in Taylor County, GA. He enlisted at Camp Stephens in Griffin, GA on 7 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F of the 27th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 13 October, sent to the parole camp there on 20 October, and was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He was wounded by gunshots to his left knee/leg and right side at Petersburg, VA and captured on 20 August 1864. He was treated at the US 2nd Division/5th Army Corps hospital at City Point, VA then admitted to the Lincoln Hospital in Washington, DC on 24 (or 26) August. He died there of his wound on 29 September 1864.
