Before Sharpsburg

A farmer's son, about age 15, he enlisted in Wayne County, NC on 10 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K of the 27th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862 but was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #2 in Richmond,, VA on 20 November, transferred to Huguenot Springs, VA on 30 November, and furloughed home.

He was killed in action at Bristoe Station, VA on 14 October 1863. His father Kirby filed a claim for his final pay in April 1864.
