Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 24 year old laborer living with his parents and 4 siblings on their farm at Ball Ground in Cherokee County, GA. He enlisted in Cherokee County on 22 July 1861 in Captain Jesse Burtz'a independent company of infantry, which was briefly Company M of the 18th Georgia Infantry, then Company F of the 28th Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD, sick, by 12 September 1862, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in hospitals in Richmond, VA by 13 October and to at least 15 November, having been formally exchanged on 10 November.

He was absent without leave in September and October 1863. He was wounded in action at Olustee, FL on 20 February 1864. He was wounded again, by a gunshot which broke his left thigh bone, and was captured at Fort Harrison/Chapin's Farm, VA on 30 September 1864. His leg was amputated on 1 October at the 18th US Army Corps field hospital, then was admitted to the US Army General Hospital at Fortress Monroe, VA on 4 October. He was transferred to the prison hospital at Hamilton, VA on 18 February 1865, and on to Point Lookout, MD on 1 March. He took an oath of allegiance to the United States there and was released on 8 June 1865.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farmer at Orange (later called Macedonia) in Cherokee County, GA, but by 1880 was farming in Delta County, TX. He was probably in Gilmer County, GA by 1900.

He married Emily Lou Westbrook (1853-1889) in December 1868. He married again, Arrena Ann Jones (1858-1936) in April 1897 in Gilmer County.
