Before Sharpsburg

In 1850 he was a 13 year old living with his parents and 3 siblings on their small farm in Greene County, NC. He enlisted at Snow Hill, NC on 27 April 1861 and mustered the same day as a Private in Company A, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He was killed in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.

His father Henry filed a claim for his final pay in December 1863.
