Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 24 year old farmer at Snow Hill in Greene County, NC. He was conscripted and enrolled in Richmond, VA on 17 July 1862, and mustered as a Private in Company A, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862, was detailed at Camp Lee making shoes into February 1863, then returned to his company.
He was sent to the rear, sick, on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA, and was again on detail in Richmond as a shoe and clothing maker for much of the rest of the year. He was captured, along with most of his regiment, at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD by 18 May. He was transferred to Elmira, NY on 16 August, took an oath of allegiance to the United States there, and was released on 23 June 1865.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer at Snow Hill, NC.

He married Celia Ann Tabitha Britt (1839-1876) in December 1857 and they had 11 children. He married again, Frances Rebecca "Fannie" Smith (1842-1879) in November 1876. He married, third, Ellen/Eloney Wood Taylor (1848-1925) in February 1885.
