Age 31 he enlisted on 27 May 1861 in Wilmington, NC and mustered as a Private in Company D, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He was promoted to Corporal on 1 September 1863 but was killed in action at Payne's Farm, VA on 27 November 1863.
