Age 28, he enlisted on 20 June 1861 in Garysburg, NC and mustered as a Private in Company D, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 10 October, sent to the parole camp on 18 October, and formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He was listed as a deserter from 27 May 1863 to at least 11 August, but returned to his company. He was captured (or deserted to the enemy) at Raccoon Ford, VA on 8 February 1864 and was sent to Alexandria, VA on 16 February, but there is no later military or prison record.
