Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 21 year old farmer living with his widowed mother and 4 siblings at Falling Creek in Wayne County, NC. He was conscripted on 15 July 1862 in Raleigh, NC and mustered as a Private in Company D, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 22 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 13 October, furloughed for 30 days on 25 October, and was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.
He returned to his company in August 1863 and was captured in action at Payne's Farm/Mine Run, VA on 27 or 28 November 1863. He was held in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC from 5 December to 3 February 1864, then sent to Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 24 February 1865. He was paroled at Goldsboro, NC, date not given.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was farming with his mother near Goldsboro in Wayne County, NC. In 1900 he was farming his own place there.
