Before Antietam
A 22 year old farmer in New Bedford, MA, he enlisted in Boston on 9 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G, 20th Massachusetts Infantry on 18 July at Camp Massasoit in Readville, MA.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was a prisoner in Richmond, VA and was paroled at Winchester, VA on 29 September. He was sent to the parole camp at Annapolis, MD on 13 October and was in the hospital there until returned to duty on 29 October 1863. He reenlisted at Stevensburg, VA on 29 March 1864 and was given a veteran's furlough, but did not return to his company.
