Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 16 year old farmer living with his mother, younger brother, and at least 2 slaves on the family's farm at White's Creek in Bladen County, NC. Giving his age as 18, he enlisted there on 28 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.
He was wounded in action by a gunshot through his thigh at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863, was furloughed home on 9 June, and returned to his company in about November 1863. He and most of his regiment were captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and was dent to Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to the prison at Elmira, NY (as John M McCloud) on 10 August 1864 and died there of variola (smallpox) on 3 February 1865.
