Age 21, he was conscripted in Wake County, NC on 15 July 1862 and mustered in Raleigh as a Private in Company H, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 9 October, sent to the parole camp on 27 October, and formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November. He returned to duty about 13 December 1862.

He was wounded by a gunshot to his left arm in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and captured. He was in DeCamp General Hospital in New York Harbor by 24 July and back in the Richmond, VA parole camp by 15 September. He was captured again, along with most of his regiment, at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and sent to Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 15 March 1865 and was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 18 March. No later military record found.
