Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 25 year old farm laborer in Wake County, NC. He was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 15 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was sick in camp in August.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, admitted to the US Army General Hospital in Chester, PA on 2 October, and sent to Fort Delaware on 24 October. On 15 December 1862 he was transferred to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange.

He was again ill in a Richmond hospital in September 1863, furloughed home to Dennisville, NC on 8 October, and back with his company by December. He was captured, along with most of his regiment, at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD, transferred to Elmira, NY on 8 August, then on to James River, VA on 9 February 1865 for exchange. He was in the parole camp at Richmond, VA on 23 February with no later military record found.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer in Wake County, NC.
