Before Sharpsburg
He was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 15 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange.
He was back with his company by February 1863 and was severely wounded in the right thigh in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and captured. He was treated in a field hospital then admitted to DeCamp General Hospital on Devil's Island in New York Harbor about 18 July. He was in a hospital in Petersburg, VA by 22 September and was on furlough back in North Carolina by October, but did not return and was listed as a deserter by August 1864.
After the War
He was living at Neuse in Wake County, NC when he applied for a Confederate pension in June 1907, then "incapacitated for manual labor."
