Before Sharpsburg
He was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 15 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort McHenry in Baltimore by 26 September. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, VA on 2 October and on to Aikens' Landing, VA the next day for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 22 October and furloughed for 30 days on the 24th.
He was back with his company by February 1863. He was sick again in May 1863 with irritatus spinalis and in hospitals in Richmond, VA to 28 July then in a Raleigh hospital to about July 1864, when he was detailed as a shoemaker there. He was on that duty to at least December 1864, the last record in his military file.
After the War
By 1870 he was a farmer at Forestville in Wake County, NC and was continued farming in the county to at least 1880. He was still suffering from "spinal trouble and paralysis" on the day he died in 1901.

He married Elizabeth Ann Ferguson (1834-1907) in March 1855 and they had at least 10 children.
