Before Sharpsburg

Age 26, he was conscripted in Raleigh, NC on 15 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD on 10 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September, admitted to the Canden Street US Army General Hospital in Baltimore on 28 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort McHenry to 12 November, then sent south for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Petersburg, VA on 21 November and furloughed on 29 November 1862.

He returned to duty about May 1863 and was wounded by a gunshot to his right shoulder joint, with fracture, in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July and captured there. He was admitted to the US Army's Camp Letterman hospital in Gettysburg on 27 July, died of his wound there on 1 August 1863, and was buried on the hospital grounds.
