Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 22 year old living with his widowed mother Martha in the Laurens District, SC. He enlisted there on 14 April 1861 and mustered in Columbia, SC on 6 June as a Private in Company A, 3rd South Carolina Infantry. He was in the division hospital in August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was probably in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD and later transferred south for exchange, dates not found. He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #5 in Richmond, VA on 25 September and returned to duty on 11 November 1862. He was with his company to at least 15 December 1864 and was surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer in Laurens County, SC.

His gravesite is on Findagrave; his stone has his birth in 1841, but early census records, his age at enlistment, and his father's death in 1837 all suggest he was born in 1837 or 1838.
