Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted at Chilesburg, Caroline County, VA on 21 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company G, 30th Virginia Infantry. He was elected First Corporal on 4 November and promoted to Sergeant by September 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then transferred on 2 October to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was officially exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 1 January 1864 and was captured at Petersburg, VA on 5 April 1865 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 19 June, when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
After the War
In 1870 he was a farmer near Central Point in Caroline County, VA. He applied for a Confederate pension in in December 1902, then living in Chilesburg, VA.
