Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 27 year old farm manager on Prosper J. G. Boudart's place near Richmond in Henrico County, VA. He enlisted in Richmond on 9 May 1862 and mustered the same day as a Private in Captain R.B. Boston's Company, Virginia Cavalry. He had served with them previously - as Company F, 3rd Virginia Artillery to 4 May 1862. They then became Company I, 2nd (Pate's) Battalion, Virginia Cavalry. On 25 June, 4 companies were added to the 6 of the Battalion, and they became the 5th Virginia Cavalry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 22 September, a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then transferred on 2 October to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was officially exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was ill and on furlough, in hospitals, or on detail from November 1863 through February 1864 and often through at least September 1864, with no later military record.

After the War

By 1880 he was a farmer in Henrico County, VA and in 1900 was retired and living in Richmond, VA.

He married Mary Ella Kelley (1836-1908) in January 1863 and they had 9 children by 1886.
