Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted on 16 April 1861 in Mecklenburg County, NC and mustered as a Private in Company B, First North Carolina Infantry. He mustered out with them on 12 November and enlisted again, at Camp Wyatt near present-day Carolina Beach, NC on 25 January 1862, and mustered in Wilmington, NC on 8 October as a Private in Company K, 30th North Carolina Infantry. He was temporarily appointed 5th Sergeant in February.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September, a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then transferred on 2 October to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was officially exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was appointed Ordnance Sergeant of the regiment on 10 March 1864 and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1870 he was a farmer at Wolfsville/Sandy Ridge, Union County, NC. In 1880 he was a school teacher there.
