Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 30 year old farmer with a small place in Cleveland County, NC. He was conscripted there on 16 August 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 48th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He died in a field hospital on about 20 September 1862. His widow Susannah filed a claim for his final pay of $34.70 in March 1863. It was probably paid in March 1865.

He married Susannah F. Pool (1828-1886) in August 1856 and they had 3 daughters; one, Edith, died on 8 September 1862.
