Before Sharpsburg
From Caroline County, VA, he enlisted in Port Conway, VA on 29 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 30th Virginia Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.
He was with his company to at least July 1864, and was paroled at Richmond, VA on 26 April 1865.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a shoe maker at Ruther Glen in Caroline County, VA.

He married Jane Ellen Barlow (1830-) and they had 4 children between 1856 and 1879.
His brothers Micajah and Thomas also enlisted with him in Company H. Both died of disease, in February and March 1862 respectively.
