From Caroline County, VA, he enlisted in Mathias Point, VA on 26 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 30th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 5 October (?), then transferred for exchange. He was wounded by a gunshot to his right hand in a skirmish at Petersburg, VA on 16 June 1864 and the first and second fingers were amputated the next day. He was in Chimborazo Hospital #3 in Richmond, VA until 21 July, when he was furloughed home for 40 days. He probably never returned to his company, and was paroled at Bowling Green, VA on 3 May 1865.
