Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was an 18 year old farm worker on the John R Webb place near Renwick in Sumter County, GA. He enlisted in Bainbridge, GA on 11 November 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 27th Georgia Infantry. The regiment was re-designated the 31st Georgia Infantry about April 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 and was back with his company by January 1863. He was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
By 1880 he was a farmer in Decatur County, GA.

He married the widow Susan Elizabeth Donaldson Dekle (1832-1911) in December 1869 and they had a son William. Her first husband Lt William Dekle had been killed at Fox's Gap in 1862.
