Jeptha Marion Whitaker

He enlisted at Bainbridge, GA on 2 December 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 27th Georgia Infantry. The regiment was re-designated the 31st Georgia Infantry about April 1862.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was captured again, at Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until exchanged on 18 February 1865. He was in the parole camp in Richmond, VA by 27 February, and was surrendered on 18 May and paroled at Tallahassee, FL on 18 May 1865.

In 1870 he was a farmer living next door to his parents' place near Bainbridge in Decatur County, GA but by 1880 and to at least 1910 had his own farm there.

He married Esther Mourning Slade (1846-1931) in February 1867 and they had 9 children.
