Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 26 year old cooper in the Lower Richland District of Onslow County, NC. He enlisted in Kinston, NC on 22 May 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company A, 35th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 11 October, sent to the parole camp there on 18 October, and was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862. Except for a detail in June and July 1863, he was with his company until captured at Five Forks, VA on 1 April 1865. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 24 June 1865 when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Richlands in Onslow County, NC.

He married Delilah "Lila" Alphin (1833-bef. 1879) and they had 4 children between 1860 and 1868. He married again, Celia Catherine Brinson (1857-1921) in 1880 and they had 9 more.
