Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 36 year old farmer with a small place near Goldsboro in Wayne County, NC. He enlisted there on 11 October 1861, giving his age as 40, and mustered near Raleigh on 29 October as a Private in Company I, 35th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 8 October, transferred to Scottsville, VA, and was discharged for disability and being over-age on 15 December 1862.
