Before Sharpsburg

He moved to Georgia in 1853 and in 1860 was an 18 year old living with his parents, 4 siblings, and 4 slaves on their farm near Lincolnton in Lincoln County GA. He enlisted at Augusta, GA on 1 October 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E, the Wright Legion. They became Company G, 38th Georgia Infantry in April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange by 27 September. He was formally exchanged on 10 November, back with his company by December 1862, and was surrendered and paroled with them at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer in Lincoln County, GA. He was living at Pansey in Lincoln County, GA when he applied for a Confederate pension for disability in 1903. By 1910 he had retired and lived with his son Charles in Lincolnton.

He married Nancy Jane Albea (1843-1888) in May 1866 and they had 5 children. He married again Louisa V "Lula" Moncrief (1844-1939) in May 1889.
