Before Sharpsburg
His father died when he was about 13 and in 1860 he was a 24 year old living with his widowed mother and 4 siblings on their small farm in Jefferson County, GA. He enlisted at Savannah, GA on 15 May 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company G, 38th Georgia Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange by 27 September. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 28 October, was formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to duty on 27 November 1862. He was wounded by a gunshot to his right side, date and place not given, and admitted to Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA on 6 February 1865. He died there on 8 February.
