Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 26 year old farm worker living with his parents, 3 younger siblings, and 2 slaves on their farm at Newton in Dale County, AL. He enlisted at Franklin, AL on 10 May 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company I, 38th Georgia Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and transferred for exchange. He was wounded by a gunshot to his arm in action at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862, and furloughed home from a Richmond, VA hospital on 8 January 1863. He was furloughed again, on 5 June 1863, with no later military record.
After the War
By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Geneva, AL.

He married Mary Jane Register (1828-1905) and they had 2 sons (born 1853, 1855). There was a John Register who enlisted in 1862 with Michael; perhaps brother or other relation to Mary Jane.
