Before Sharpsburg

Age 16, he enlisted at Bennett's Crossroads in Sampson County, NC on 18 October 1861 and mustered on 16 January 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh as a Private in Company C, 38th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal by September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 7 October, furloughed on 19 October and formally exchanged to return to duty on 20 November, but was discharged for being under-age on 9 December 1862.

By then 18 years old, he enlisted again, on 23 July 1863 in New Hanover County, NC and mustered as a Private in Company B of the First Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery. He was sick, in camp and in a Wilmington, NC hospital into February 1864 but back on duty by June 1864, with no later military record.

After the War

By 1870 he was a farmer near Blackman's Mills in Sampson County, NC.

He married Nancy Haywood Elizabeth Whitfield (1848-1874) in September 1866 and they had 2 sons. He may have married again, Nancy C (?).
