Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 22 year old farm worker living with his parents, 3 siblings, and at least 8 slaves on their farm at Newton Grove in Sampson County, NC. He enlisted there on 18 October 1861 and mustered on 16 January 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh as a Private in Company C, 38th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was left behind "on the march in Maryland" and probably sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD. He died there of disease on 9 September 1862.
