Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old teacher living with his parents and 2 sisters on their small farm at Piney Grove in Sampson County, NC. He enlisted in Sampson County, NC on 22 October 1861 and mustered on 16 January 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh as 2nd Corporal of Company D, 38th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant on 18 April, to First Sergeant on 4 August, and elected 3rd (Junior 2nd) Lieutenant on 21 August.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 6 October and furloughed home on 21 October. He was formally exchanged on 10 November but died "at home" on 30 November 1862.
