John Allen Weeks

In 1860 he was a 17 year old farm worker living with his widowed mother and 6 younger siblings at Piney Grove in Sampson County, NC. He enlisted at Clinton, NC on 22 October 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 38th North Carolina Infantry. He was sick, in a hospital, and joined his unit in May 1862 near Fredericksburg, VA.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital from 15 to 24 October and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was captured at Williamsport, MD on the retreat from Gettysburg on 4 July 1863, admitted to the Newton University Hospital in Baltimore on 19 July, transferred to Chester, PA the next day, and was exchanged and rejoined his company by December. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

In 1870 he was back farming with his mother and siblings in Piney Grove/Clinton, NC but by 1880 and to at least 1900 had his own farm there.

He married Peggy Jane Wilkins (1847-1910) and they had 6 children between 1873 and 1887.
