Joseph Eliga Cobb

In 1860 he was an unemployed 22 year old living with his parents and younger siblings on their small farm near Auburn in Macon County, AL. He was an unmarried farmer at Tuskegee, AL when he enlisted there on 28 April 1861 and he mustered in Lynchburg, VA as a Private in Company B, 4th Alabama Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862.

He was detailed as a litter-bearer from about August 1863 through February 1864 and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865. Except for those of the Maryland Campaign, he was with his company in all of their engagements through the war.

By 1870 he was a farm worker at Evergreen in Panola County, TX and in 1900 he was farming his own place there.

It is likely that his middle name was intended to be Elijah, but his widow spelled it Eliga, as he may have done. His gravesite is on Findagrave.

He married Sallie A. Merriman (1853-1930) in Panola County, TX in February 1871 and they had 5 children.
