Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 19 year old farm worker living with his parents and 3 siblings on their small farm at Calhoun in Gordon County, GA. He enlisted there on 29 April 1861 and mustered in Augusta, GA on 4 May as a Private in Company F, 4th Georgia Infantry. He was sick in camp and in hospitals for much of the summer of 1862 with gonorrhea and returned to his company on 21 August.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA on 2 October for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 12 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and furloughed for 30 days on 15 November. He died at Fredericksburg, VA on 19 April 1863.
