Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old laborer in Northumberland County, VA. He enlisted on 26 May 1861 at Heathsville, VA and mustered as a Private in Company G, 40th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 17 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to duty on 1 December 1862. He was killed in action at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863.
