Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted on 25 May 1861 at Hague, VA and mustered as a Private in Company A, 40th Virginia Infantry. He transferred to Company K after July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 10 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and furloughed on 12 November 1862.

He was absent without leave in December 1862 and "under arrest" by 28 February 1863: sentenced by a court martial to 15 days in the guardhouse and forfeiture of pay from 12 November 1862 to 10 February 1863. He was with his company to 27 April 1864, and again went absent without leave, with no later military record.

After the War

By 1870 he was a laborer living with his father at Nomini Grove in Westmoreland County, VA.
