Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 33 year old ice dealer in Richmond, VA. He enlisted in March 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA and mustered as a Private in Company A, 40th Virginia Infantry. He transferred to Company K, date not found.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 20 October and formally exchanged on 10 November, but died on 15 November 1862.
His widow Mary filed a claim in Richmond for his final pay of $96.50 in June 1863; it was probably paid in August 1864.
