Edwin C. Edwards

Probably orphaned at about age 11 in 1850, in 1860 he was a 21 year old farmer living with his brother (?) Thomas W. B. Edwards, his family, 2 sisters (?), and 11 slaves on their farm at Kinsale in Westmoreland County, VA. He enlisted on 25 May 1861 at Hague, VA and mustered as a Private in Company A, 40th Virginia Infantry. He transferred to Company K, date not found.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 20 October and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was captured again, at Falling Waters, MD on 14 July 1863 on the retreat from Gettysburg, PA and was held in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC until 9 or 11 August, when he was sent to Point Lookout, MD. He was admitted to Hammond General Hospital there, in October but died of disease on 12 October 1863.

Kinsale, VA is just across the Potomac River from Point Lookout, MD, perhaps 10 miles as the crow flies.
