Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 29 year old laborer living with planter Joseph Henry Barham and family on their large place at Jerusalem in Southampton County, VA. He enlisted on 24 May 1861 at Sussex Court House, VA and mustered as a Private in Company A, 41st Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 10 October and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was in hospitals and on furlough periodically to at least August 1863 and afterward with his company until surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farm worker on the Robert Whitehead place at Jerusalem in Southampton County, VA but by 1880 had his own farm there (Jerusalem was renamed Courtland in 1888). He was a farmer in Sussex County, VA when he applied for a Confederate pension for disability in September 1900 but returned to Southampton County in 1902.
